THE ROLE OF THE PRESS IN THE FREE AND FAIR ELECTION IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study examines the role of the press in the free and fair election in Nigeria. Specifically, the study determines the extent has the press been socially responsible, examines the extent can government and people assist the press playing its role in ensuring free and fair election, and determines the problems and the future challenges. The study employs the survey descriptive research design. Hence, the questionnaire was used for data collection which was raised against a four Likert scale of Strongly Agree(SA), Agree(A), Disagree(SD) and Strongly Disagree(D) while the data collected were analyzed using frequency tables. A total of 146 respondents were conveniently selected as sample size comprising of  selected staff of INEC, political party members and staff of media houses in Awka, Anambra State. And 141 were validated. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings reveals thatextent the press has been socially responsible is very high. The study also shows that the extent government and people can assist the press playing its role in ensuring free and fair election is very high. The study therefore recommends that The media or press arm of political parties should make monthly public relations announcements aimed at educating the public on their rights, electoral laws and duties, before, during and after the election, as well as new programmes and ideologies of the parties
